The Future of Unreal Tournament

In case you missed the news, work on the future of Unreal Tournament has begun and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.

bufut

Here’s the plan:

  • We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
  • From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
  • If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
  • All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
  • The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
  • Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.

So what’s the catch?

  • It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch.
  • When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
  • We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.

A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don’t yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we’ll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you’re a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be fun.

I’m highly anticipating this game! Very intrigued by the business model behind this installment.

    • Baloo Uriza

I think it can work. It’s the same model Linden Research has been using for Second Life for around a decade now, to great success. And Second Life’s success is influential in TF2 becoming a free-to-play game with a lot of user-generated content. And Gary’s Mod’s sheer existence.

Please introduce kill streaks but dont go overboard like COD franchise has done. keep it 3 / 5 / 7 or something.

    • Torinir

Kill Streaks have been a part of UT since the original. Killing Spree at 5, Rampage at 10, Dominating at 15, Unstoppable at 20, Godlike at 25

    • Baloo Uriza

Along with that, since we’re talking open source, let’s cross polinate a little bit. I wouldn’t mind a “crotch shot” against an armorless opponent (similar to the headshot, but funnier and less mature) (3/5 combo being crotch domination/crotch master) from the UT99 “crotch shot” mod. Bring in the Air Shot and electro mods from Nexuiz.

yeah and like, we can have cars and drive around and fire guns from the drivers sweet, lets make gta look like a saint.

    • Steven Meiresonne

A lot of games have copied the killing streak system introduced the original UT 99 game. So no need to ‘re-introduce’ it. Keep it as it has always been a part of UT.

  • Honelith

Look to UT99 when designing this one, your best ever UT! :D

    • Baloo Uriza

I dunno, UT04 brought a lot of good elements to the table. That said, I didn’t really understand the cicada until I moved to someplace where that’s actually an insect.

      • havok2020

ALL about 2k4…3 and 4 had the best movement in the series, and the most challenge in my opinion.

Also another fan of UT2k4. Not a huge gamer, but something about UT2004 always brings me back – maybe familiarity versus other games, maybe that I know it’ll always run on whatever PC I throw it on (I ran it on a Pentium II-266 at one point!), maybe the unusually awesome graphics for its time (coming on 6 CDs may have something to do there)… but I hadn’t even seen the new UT’s yet. Still, they did something right there!

      • Nefe

Well, ut99 did have campaign…. so it isin’t Only mp.

      • BaTycoon

Does that mean no AI, besides whats required for monsters?

  • Benke Bepponen

i would like to take this chance to thank u for doing a remake of one of my total favorite childhood games. ive spent thousands of hours in the classic UT and ive been waiting for so long to do it once again! <3 Epic

I agree, But my wife wont. :)

  • Drejzer

    Will we get vehicles?

  • Eric Freiberg

I’d love to see Unreal Tournament to become cross-platform. Friends of me already got UT99 and UT2004 running on Linux – and are working to fix some bugs for the UT3 wine package… Would be great if UT4 would be natively compatible with Linux… (ok, that will never happen :/)

  • Michael

:O I just got the greatest idea ever if someone can strike a deal with Epic they should totally remake Unreal 1:D that would be the shit !!!!!!!!

  • http://scary.tasty.sexy Сёма Мрачный

I’d like to feel that good old spirit of Tournament again. no war like in 3rd, no other simulations, just boody sport.

  • http://www.niceguyjim.com Hominid

OK, this is cool. UT is the only FPS I’ve ever really enjoyed long term… the giant maps, low grav, etc. SO much fun. I’m excited to see where this goes.

    Boom Headshot!

Wandered past this at random: This is the best news I’ve had since my daughter was born!

All I can say Flak, will read up, work out how to contribute and spread the word to oldies and newbies.

What’s that reflecting up in the roofto…*whump*

Absolutely love the unreal series. I played UT99 and UT2004 for over 10 years. I recently just brought a new rig and am getting back into gaming. I hope you make this game more like UT99 and UT2004, I feel the weapons on UT3 were aimed more at console users as they felt very slow.

I used to play UT with a keyboard and a mouse, for me it just feels more natural as you have more control over your player.

It seems like a great idea that you are giving the community more control over the creation of this game, making the game free is an amazing choice as it will bring in loads of players. I just hope you can come up with a good way of collecting revenue without turning players away. I would make it free to play and then once the community is sufficiently large charge a one off fee, from what i’ve read a lot of UT sceners were put off by UT3 so this would be the carrot that draws them back into the area. Also, maybe offer a discount to people who help promote the game on social media such as facebook. Viral marketing could make this game massive as long as you get the promotional material right:

In terms of promotional material I feel you definitely need to tell the new generation of gamers exactly what makes unreal tournament unlike any other FPS, i’m sure there are other gamers here who can advise but I think it’s called twitch FPS, as in fast action, fast weapons and the ability to jump and dodge jump. for me that was part of the skill, as with all those features you have the ability to anticipate peoples behaivour and dodge the bullets, that’s why UT is so much fun. There’s a whole new generation of gamers now and nothing like UT for them to play, now is definitely the right time to put out a new UT game.

It would be cool if you could add a drop slide like you can do is ghost recon just because it’s fun to do.

I would leave out campaign mode and not have any storyline. Surely that will save you time and money.

Please make the graphics less gothic and more sci/fi fantasy looking like they were back in ut2004 / 99

The gun sounds in UT99 were so much more louder and punchier than in UT3 and UT2004, would be good if you could reproduce this again.

Is there anyway I could get access to play the alpha and give back constructive criticism in return? I am based in the uk and have an i7 4930k, 8gb and gf 750ti running win7. Please email leerees[át]gmail.com

    Many thanks.

  • Jānis Bērziņš

Too bad it plays a bit like counterstrike now :/
I mean the whole loud footsteps thing and crouching to walk silently.

    • Marissa lou

i love CS but I always liked that old UT felt more like DOOM of even TF2. I like fast paced

  • Marissa lou

as long as 04 style bombing run is included, im sold already. XD

  • Technane

I would say UT99 was the best but if you could merge the movemetn from UT04 into UT 99 then YES please … I am a wall bouncer

    • Technane

Like to mention that I still play UT99 I even played it today!

  • Austen Lowe

I want the razor jack back, bouncy bullets that can take a head off is brilliant.

  • Riptos

This is horrendous, I watched a video showcasing the movement and I dont understand what market thinks this brand of dodging is the way forward.

It’s like all the walls are made of Velcro. That would be aggravating as hell trying to hit the flagcarrier in CTF.

    • Monty Crabapples

Agreed. (UT99 FAN) i find the wall jumping in the alpha video quite disgusting Tbh and if the wall jumping in the youtube video i seen is in the final release i shall not be buying at all.

      • Josh

        Buying?
        Isn’t it free…?

  • Fil

Please GET THE CONTROLS RIGHT! The number one problem with remakes of old games, is the controls are always too floaty and not tight enough for hardcore players.
